The rights of the book were bought soon after its release by Pilgrim Media Group and they will be collaborating with Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group for adapting the book into a movie. The project is still in its early days though, it doesn’t even have a screenwriter yet, let alone a release date.
The book is about a clever econometrician called Stella who happens to be on the autism spectrum. She decides she must learn about relationships and so she hires a male escort. Taking the matter quite seriously, she drafts a whole curriculum to understand relationships. But as the lessons go along, the two of them fall in love.
The book just released on June 5, 2018. It’s a great example of how both books and movies are beginning to better represent the diversity of the world.
The author herself is on the autism spectrum and feels people like her are not accurately represented.
“The ironic thing is that while my character choices may seem wild, they are completely natural to me,” Hoang wrote in a story for Bustle. “I am on the spectrum, and I am half-Asian, but only recently have I begun to see these parts of myself reflected positively and realistically in popular media.”
