‘I Am Watching You’ by Teresa Driscoll is an intriguing thriller

I Am Watching You by Teresa Driscoll is an intriguing thriller. Though the premise is simple, the way it’s told is interesting.

Driscoll’s thriller follows Ella Longfield, a florist from a small town. The story starts with Ella on a train overhearing two young girls befriending two convicts, who have just been released from prison. Being a mother, she considers telling their parents before deciding she’s being overprotective and interfering. The next day one of the girls is missing.

The story picks up a year later and we see attempts to solve the mystery of the missing girl from several perspectives. Ella, the father of the missing girl, her friend Sarah, and a private detective all go through their lives haunted by the incident and trying to solve it. Each chapter reveals a little more about the night of the disappearance and hints at a lot more. The short chapters never seem to tell you enough before switching to another character’s perspective and thus, the story keeps you hooked. It’s cleverly written and has a good balance of emotions with the facts which build up the suspense.

The characters are well defined and varied, never too nice or perfect. From the private detective who left the police to the confused teenager, all have a strong voice, even if the characters are slightly cliched. The book reads fast, as it’s both short and gripping and the ending is a complete surprise. Those who like to predict the ending may find the lack of foreshadowing annoying but the build-up of tension is worth it. It is a good book to finish on a flight.
